In a world of mass production, Doug Hill's hands tell a different story. With over three decades of craftsmanship flowing through his fingertips—a legacy passed down through three generations of carpenters—Doug transforms reclaimed wood into pieces that bring people together and celebrate nature's inherent beauty at Grayhill Woodworking.
Doug's journey began at 16 as a carpenter's apprentice in northern NJ, where he spent a decade learning the fundamentals before mastering his craft through 25 years as a contractor. But in 2017, he made a pivotal decision: to focus exclusively on creating fine woodwork that allows his creativity to flourish, establishing Grayhill Woodworking LLC.
"I don't force the wood into submission," Doug explains, running his hand across the silky-smooth surface of a bowl with striking grain patterns. "I listen to what each piece wants to become. The wood speaks, and my hands translate."
This philosophy shines through in every unique piece created at Grayhill Woodworking—from turned bowls that showcase nature's perfect imperfections to custom furniture designed specifically for your space. Doug's versatility with the lathe, carving tools, and traditional carpentry techniques allows him to craft everything from elegant dining accessories to statement furniture pieces.
What truly sets Grayhill Woodworking apart is the story behind each creation. Approximately 95% of materials come from reclaimed sources—trees that fell during storms, wood rescued from demolition sites, or leftover materials from construction projects. Each piece carries its own history, preserved and transformed rather than discarded.
Customers often remark on the tactile experience of Grayhill pieces—the surprising smoothness that doesn't sacrifice the wood's natural warmth and character. Many are drawn to specific pieces after hearing their origin stories, like the "double ring bowl" whose natural grain pattern mirrors the joining of two lives, making it a perfect wedding gift.
Whether you're gathering friends around a handcrafted charcuterie board, serving a special meal with custom utensils, or transforming a family heirloom into something functional for your current life (like the chess set crafted from a beloved but unused chest of drawers), Grayhill Woodworking's creations foster connection—to nature, to cherished memories, and to the people who matter most.
As the sole artisan behind every piece, Doug personally ensures that each item leaving the Grayhill workshop meets his exacting standards. His partner Carol handles the business aspects, allowing Doug to focus entirely on creating exceptional woodwork.
If you're seeking something that can't be found on a department store shelf—something with character, craftsmanship, and conscience—we invite you to browse Grayhill Woodworking's collection or discuss a custom piece that will become part of your home and your story.
